For seventy years the old-fashioned singing Chuck Wagon Gang has been proclaiming the gospel in song starting with that very first recorded gospel song “The Son Hath Made Me Free”. The year was 1936 and the Carter Quartet, as they were then known, was assigned a daily radio program in Ft. Worth which had been vacated by a western music group called the Chuck Wagon Gang. At the station’s request, the Carters assumed the name and began performing cowboy/western tunes as the group before them had done. Their love of gospel songs prompted them to include a closing hymn each day and it wasn’t long before the requests for the gospel songs far outnumbered the requests for the western tunes. It wasn’t hard then to convince the station to allow them to go to an all gospel format. The rest, as they say, is history. The Chuck Wagon Gang has become the biggest selling gospel group in history, having sold nearly 40 million records. Most of our families have grown up listening to this legendary group, so when they approached these country music legends about singing a song on this special 70th anniversary recording, the artists responded with a resounding “yes”. It is with great pride that Song Garden Music Group presents this “once in a lifetime” CD featuring the world famous Chuck Wagon Gang along with some of their favorite country music friends.
